Scan tron testing today
continue with reading novels for two book reports
continue work on syllabus

Thursday, May 9, 2013

Star testing is complete. LP 9 is over and we are into LP 10! Where did the year go?

Please bring Literature book to class next week as I will give class time to work on assignments from the syllabus.

Read two short novels and turn in two samples of work to show you read the book. Recall that this is a creative assignment as I do not need to have a summary or a book report. An email response will suffice.

Remember all assignments are due on May 23rd or SOONER :)

Opening Your Eyes and Ears to Human Rights Issues

· Share an anecdote about your growing awareness of human rights issues in your neighborhoods, your country, and/or the world. This awareness begins and grows when we open our eyes and ears to information that is all around us.

· Share instances in your own life where you might look for and find people and projects focused on being a human rights defender.

· Brainstorming people and places that might offer information about issues related to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR).

o Public service announcements (PSAs) on TV; film trailers; benefit concerts and events; celebrity causes; editorials; fundraisers; church/ synagogue announcements; interviews with friends and family; world news on TV, in print and online; church group projects; documentaries; efforts of local organizations; boy/girl scout projects; service groups within your school.

o Collect a list of places where you have found problems with human rights, and projects aimed at making them better. Add to the list what you know about the issue, what is being done about it, and what you can do to help.

o List to be displayed in the classroom for inspiration.

Show a written response to the clip including collected information, thoughts, feelings, and questions.

Identify at least two topics you are interested in learning more about.
Reading and researching to find your ‘spark’
What inspires you to act?

Mission:

You will be spending two to three days conducting independent research in an effort to identify your ‘sparks’ – issues that inspire you to take action. Use Spark handout or see below. Type and then print your notes and turn them in for evaluation.

Finding your SPARK

What is your Spark? What inspires you toward action?

Day 1

Visit www.freethechildren.com Click Get Involved Click Get Educated

Choose an issue and learn! You need to leave this class more informed about two issues than you were before you arrived.

ISSUE 1: What more have I learned? What questions do I have? How am I feeling about the issue? What I am thinking about the issue?

ISSUE 2: What more have I learned? What questions do I have? How am I feeling about the issue? What I am thinking about the issue? What is your Spark?

Day 2

Any sparks yet? How will you spend your time in class today so that tomorrow you are prepared to select your issues?

Research your selected issues using different sources. Explore more issues

· What issues did I explore today?

· What websites did I learn from?

· What more have I learned?

· What questions do I have?

· How am I feeling about the issue? What I am thinking about the issue?
